Wiley University honors the life and legacy of Aubrey James “A.J.” Jessie Jr., Class of 1979, a proud alumnus whose love for Wiley remained a meaningful part of his life.

A.J. distinguished himself both academically and athletically during his time at Wiley College. He earned Dean’s List honors each semester from 1976 through 1979 and graduated magna cum laude in 1979. As a student athlete, he was a member of the 1976 Wildcats baseball team that captured the District 8 NAIA North Zone championship and made history as the first HBCU to play at the original Rangers Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He later served as captain of the 1978–1979 Wildcats team.

A.J. was also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and his Wiley experience reflected a commitment to academic excellence, leadership, perseverance, and service. His achievements helped contribute to a proud chapter in the University’s athletic history and remained an important part of his lifelong connection to his alma mater.

In recognition of his contributions to Wiley athletics, A.J. will be posthumously inducted into the Wiley University Hall of Fame. This honor further preserves his place in the University’s history and celebrates the impact he made as a Wildcat student athlete.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 2, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler, Texas. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Louis Baptist Church in Tyler, with burial to follow at Rockhill Cemetery near Cuney.

Wiley University proudly remembers A.J. Jessie and honors the legacy he leaves within our institution. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, fraternity brothers, former teammates, friends, and loved ones.
