It is exciting to usher in our return of Golf with the appointment of Coach David Swanson, as men’s and women’s Head Golf Coach and launch the Bill Spiller and Ted Rhodes Scholarship. ” As we announce the appointment of Dr. Brooks, the new athletic programs offer a significant alignment with today’s student and community wants. The University is excited to usher in the return of the golf program with the appointment of Coach David Swanson, as men’s and women’s Head Golf Coach and launch the Bill Spiller and Ted Rhodes Scholarship.

“It is our vision to have these new programs and state of the art facilities for these programs. By Fall 2026, the new programs of E-sports, Bass Fishing, and Women’s Flag Football will have its first recruits. We will be one of the first HBCUs in Texas to host all three athletic programs,” remarked President Herman J. Felton, Jr.

Wiley University’s choice to implement these programs stems from the rich traditions at the institution and the region. Bass Fishing is an ideal fit because of the institution’s location in East Texas, which is within driving distance of several nationally recognized fishing destinations in Texas and neighboring Louisiana, including Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Toledo Bend Reservoir, both known for hosting major bass fishing tournaments.

As one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, women’s flag football gains national recognition and collegiate support through providing new opportunities for women to compete and represent Wiley University.

The Esports program expands the Wildcat Athletics claw print into the rapidly growing world of competitive gaming. Esports continues to grow across colleges and universities nationwide, offering students opportunities to compete in organized tournaments while developing skills in strategy, teamwork, and digital engagement.

The expansion of Wiley University Athletics reflects a broader vision for institutional growth. Dr. Brooks, who is a graduate of Tennessee State University and the University, who has an extensive career including serving as a Character Coach, a former Director of Trio Student Support Services and facilitator of the University’s Influxer NIL program, is ready to lead the Wildcat scholar-athletes.
