Applications Now Open for Fall 2025 Inaugural Class

Marshall, TX –  Wiley University proudly announces the launch of the Thelma DeWitty Honors Program, a prestigious academic initiative designed to develop visionary leaders through rigorous scholarship, leadership training, and cultural exploration. The program will welcome its inaugural class in Fall 2025, and applications are now open.

Named in honor of Thelma DeWitty, a 1941 graduate of Wiley College and a trailblazing educator and civil rights advocate, the program embodies her legacy of courage, excellence, and impact. DeWitty made history as the first Black teacher hired by Seattle Public Schools, breaking barriers in education and paving the way for generations to come.

“At its core, the Thelma DeWitty Honors Program is designed to elevate exceptionalism, foster intellectual curiosity, and prepare students to become changemakers in their respective fields. Our scholars will not just aim high—they break barriers, challenge norms, and create legacies that inspire future generations,” said Dana Michelle Fergins, M.Ed., M.A., Director of the Thelma DeWitty Honors Program.

The program will be led by Fergins, a dynamic and accomplished leader with more than 20 years of experience in public and higher education. As both Honors Program Director and Lecturer, she will empower students through research-based strategies, immersive learning, and values-driven leadership. A two-time Teacher of the Year, she serves on the Board of the Lupus Foundation of America (Lone Star Chapter) and formerly chaired the Junior League of Collin County’s Adaptive Leadership Training Committee. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Riverbend Rotary Club in Shreveport, Louisiana, and a recipient of the NISOD Master Presenter Award, which honors excellence in teaching and leadership.

In addition to her leadership role at Wiley University, Fergins is a nationally recognized speaker, delivering keynotes and workshops focused on equitable education, implicit bias, effective communication, and leadership development. Her passion and expertise will help shape the next generation of socially conscious scholars and changemakers.

High-achieving students are encouraged to apply now to be part of this transformative academic experience. For more information and to apply, visit https://www.wileyc.edu/thelma-dewitty-honors-program  or contact dana.fergiep@gmail.com.
