The mission of the Health and Physical Education Department is to prepare highly competent, reflective, and ethical scholars who promote lifelong health, wellness, spiritual, and holistic development in diverse educational environments.  The Health and Physical Education Department envisions a future where every educator we prepare empowers students to thrive physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

The Health and Physical Education Department at Wiley University, housed within the School of Education, is committed to delivering high-quality academic programs that foster physical activity, healthy lifestyles, and the holistic development of students. The department offers undergraduate degree programs with a focus on K–12 physical and health education instruction. Emphasizing practical skills, professional preparedness, and a growth mindset, the department seeks to develop socially and emotionally well-rounded individuals equipped to promote wellness in diverse educational settings.

Central to the department’s mission is a commitment to addressing the academic, emotional, spiritual, and social behaviors of students. Faculty and curriculum are intentionally designed to support the whole person, recognizing that effective educators must be prepared to nurture all aspects of student development. Through coursework, field experiences, and co-curricular opportunities, students learn to integrate this holistic approach into their teaching practices, empowering them to create inclusive and supportive learning environments. By cultivating educators who value and promote total wellness—physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional—the department plays a vital role in shaping future leaders who will positively impact their schools and communities.

Program Objectives

Demonstrate Knowledge – a comprehensive understanding of physical education concepts aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), including motor skill development, health-related fitness, anatomy, kinesiology, and principles of health promotion.

Supporting Comprehensive Student Development - Implement developmentally appropriate instructional strategies that promote the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth of K–12 students, aligned with state standards and best practices in physical education, ensuring alignment with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards.

Model and Promote Lifelong Wellness – Serve as effective role models by integrating and advocating for lifelong physical activity, personal fitness, and overall wellness within school and community settings.

Implement Culturally Responsive Teaching – Design and deliver inclusive physical education experiences that reflect respect for diverse cultural, social, and individual backgrounds, while promoting equity and student engagement across all grade levels.

Certification Pathways

Health and Physical Education majors at Wiley University are eligible to earn two professional certifications as part of their academic program.

Physical Education - This pathway prepares candidates to teach physical education across all grade levels (K–12) in Texas public schools. The program includes clinical teaching or internship experiences, with an emphasis on motor skill development, physical fitness, movement concepts, instructional strategies, assessment practices, and promoting lifelong physical activity and wellness.

Health Education - This pathway prepares candidates to teach health education across all grade levels (K-12) in Texas public schools. The program  includes clinical teaching or internship experiences, focusing on topics such as human development, personal and community health, substance abuse prevention, nutrition, mental health, and health advocacy.

Future Career Pathways

A degree in physical education offers a comprehensive foundation for diverse professional pathways within the domains of education, athletics, and health and wellness. Graduates emerge with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to assume roles such as physical education teacher, coach, athletic director, athletic trainer, and fitness instructor. Beyond conventional educational and athletic settings, the degree also positions individuals for meaningful careers in corporate wellness, community recreation, and broader areas within the sports and health-related industries.

Physical Education Pathway

Educational and School-Based Roles:

Physical Education Teacher: Teach physical activity and promote healthy lifestyles in elementary, middle, or high schools. 

Athletic Director: Manage and oversee athletic programs in schools, colleges, or universities. 

Adaptive Physical Education Specialist: Work with individuals with disabilities to adapt physical activities to their needs. 

College Instructor/Professor: Teach physical education courses at the college or university level. 

Health Educator: Promote health and wellness in schools or community settings. 

Sports and Recreation Roles:

Coach: Train and mentor athletes in various sports at different levels (middle school, high school, college, club). 

Athletic Trainer: Provide medical care and rehabilitation to athletes. 

Fitness Instructor: Lead fitness classes and guide individuals in exercise programs. 

Recreation Director: Manage recreational programs and facilities in community centers, parks, or resorts. 

Sports Psychologist: Help athletes improve their mental game and performance. 

Sports Agent: Represent athletes and negotiate contracts. 

Strength and Conditioning Coach: Develop and implement training programs to enhance athletic performance.

Personal Trainer: Provide individualized fitness training and guidance. 

Exercise Physiologist: Assess and treat individuals with chronic diseases or injuries through exercise. 

Corporate Wellness Specialist: Design and implement wellness programs for employees in corporate settings. 

Health and Wellness Coordinator: Promote health and wellness initiatives within organizations or communities.
