About the Program

The Elementary Education program at Wiley University prepares future educators to become culturally responsive, data-informed, and instructionally effective teachers committed to excellence in diverse and inclusive learning environments. Aligned with the Wiley University Educator Preparation Program (WU-EPP) Framework, the program emphasizes empowerment through knowledge, alignment to state and national standards, and inspiration for lifelong learning and service.

This program equips candidates with the pedagogical knowledge, professional dispositions, and clinical experience needed to meet the academic and developmental needs of children in Texas public schools. Through rigorous coursework, field-based experiences, and high-quality mentorship, candidates are prepared to successfully pass the Texas teacher certification exams and enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence.

Program Objectives

Graduates of the Elementary Education program will:
Demonstrate a strong understanding of child development, curriculum standards (TEKS), and evidence-based instructional strategies.

Apply principles of culturally responsive teaching to create inclusive and equitable learning environments.

Design and implement developmentally appropriate lessons that integrate reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.

Use formal and informal assessments to guide instruction and improve student learning.

Exhibit professional and ethical behaviors aligned with the Texas Educator Code of Ethics and Texas PPR Standards.

Engage in reflective practice and continuous professional growth.

Future Job Opportunities

Certification Pathways

Students in the Elementary Education program may pursue one of the following Texas teaching certification pathways:

EC–6 Core Content with Science of Teaching Reading (STR)

Prepares candidates to teach all core subjects (ELAR, Math, Science, Social Studies) and demonstrate mastery of the STR competencies required by the Texas Education Agency.

 4–8 Science

 Prepares candidates to teach science to students in grades 4 through 8 with emphasis on scientific inquiry, experimentation, and TEKS-aligned instruction.

 4–8 Social Studies

Prepares candidates to teach history, geography, government, and economics to students in grades 4 through 8, integrating critical thinking and culturally responsive content.

Each pathway includes targeted coursework, certification-aligned assessments, and field experiences in real K–12 classrooms.

Graduates of the Elementary Education program are well-positioned for careers such as:
