Our Wileyite Spotlight for the month of September shines on Mr. Nolan Anderson of Marshall, Texas, who graduated with honors from H. B. Pemberton Jr. and Sr. High School in 1964. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wiley College in 1969. He now resides in San Antonio, Texas. Anderson is a member of the College’s Board of Trustees.
Following college, Anderson honorably served the United States Air Force as a field grade commissioned officer from 1969-1989, specializing in the Transportation and Training career fields. He was awarded several meritorious and commendation medals after serving both overseas and stateside. While in service, he earned a Master of Science in Management from Troy State University, Troy, Alabama, in 1977. During his last assignment in the military in San Antonio, he taught a transportation distribution course for two semesters at the Park College (now University) extension program, formerly located at the Kelly Field Air Force Base.
After his armed services career, he worked at his alma mater from 1990- 1992 as the Director of Alumni Affairs, interim Development Officer, and an adjunct faculty, teaching transportation and general management courses.
In June 2017, Anderson retired as a public school administrator after serving 13 years as the Executive Director of Transportation for the North East Independent School District and for 12 years as the Assistant Director of Transportation and Custodial Services for the Northside ISD, both of San Antonio.
Active in community service, Anderson is a Life Member and serves as President of the Wiley College National Alumni Association, Incorporated. As president, Anderson has been supportive of the association’s initiatives and has served intermittently in various officer positions since 1977, and is a member of the San Antonio Wiley Club (SAWC).
For 52 years he has been an active member Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and is an active member of the local chapter in San Antonio, Texas-Delta Rho Lambda. He is an Honorary Life Member of the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (TAPT), a Certified Texas Pupil Transportation Official and a TAPT continuing education master instructor.
Anderson has been honored for being the first recipient of the TAPT CENTEX Chapter Life Time Achievement Award. Most recently he received the MCL Humanitarian Award presented by the African-American Community Awareness Project of San Antonio, and a special award from the San Antonio Metropolitan Chapter, Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated, for Education-Celebrating Community Leaders Making a Difference. He’s a member of and serves as president-elect for the Alamo Alliance of Black School Educators (AAABSE), and is a member of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators (TABSE).
Anderson and his wife of 49 years, Claudette Brossard Anderson, a member of the class of 1973 at Wiley College, have three children and four grandchildren.
