Wiley College One of Awardees  of a SeaChange Capital Grant

Wiley College was part of a consortium of five HBCUs awarded a $25k grant from SeaChange Capital during the 2022 Higher Education Leadership Foundation convening. The purpose of the grant is to pursue collaborative efforts to improve mental health support for its students.

The grant, funded by SeaChange Capital, will be used to explore how to improve support systems at HBCUs for addressing mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, feelings of hopelessness, and other consequences of racial trauma that may affect students. The grant is designed to also increase collaboration among HBCUs to increase scaling and implementation.

The group of institutions will create a consortium of resources to serve as a framework for supporting the spiritual and mental health of their students. Other HBCU consortium awardees along with Wiley College include Arkansas Baptist College, Harris-Stowe State University, Southern University at Baton Rouge, and Southern University at Shreveport.

“I am very excited to receive this grant from SeaChange Capital and to partner with other HBCUs to serve as a catalyst for change to address mental health issues, anxiety, depression, trauma, and stigma. With increases of suicide among African American, Wiley College is ready to be a leader for such a time as this.”- Dr. Howard O. Gibson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Strategic Retention.”
