Marshall, TX – Wiley College officials have scheduled the biannual President’s Convocation for Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the Julius S. Scott, Sr. Chapel on the Wiley campus. Although classes began on January 12th, the President’s Convocation is the event that marks the formal opening of the spring semester. The opening address will be delivered by special guest Bishop Gregory V. Palmer. Bishop Palmer is the President of The United Methodist Council of Bishops and the Resident Bishop of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference.
Wiley College begins its 137th year in Marshall, Texas, and proudly bears the distinction of being the oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi River. Founded in 1873 by the Freedman’s Aid Society of The Methodist Episcopal Church, Wiley College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and is a primarily liberal arts, residential, co-educational, baccalaureate degree-granting institution affiliated with The United Methodist Church.
