ETHICAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE BEGINS THURSDAY

Wiley to debate Harvard Friday night

College students from around the country will spend three days at Wiley participating in workshops and activities designed to enhance ethics, morality, and leadership characteristics as part of the College’s Seventh Annual Ethical Student Leadership Conference January 24-26. A highlight of the conference will be a debate between Wiley and Harvard University Friday at 7 p.m. in the College’s Julius S. Scott Sr. Chapel.

Speakers during the conference will include: Amy Jensen, Senior Associate at United Nations Foundation, who will discuss “Nothing But Nets,” A global, grassroots campaign to raise awareness and funding to fight malaria in Africa; Dr. Deborah Ballard-Reisch, Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Chair in Strategic Communication at Wichita State University, who will discuss “Universities and Colleges Against Hunger,” in a skyped presentation; Reverend Bridgette Young-Ross, Assistant General Secretary for College Ministries, General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church, who will discuss “ Leadership When There Are No Easy Answers,” and Tim Swain, a poet and author, who will lead a town hall discussion, “The Power of One: Becoming Mission in Action.”

Dr. Shirley Greene, Assistant Dean of Students and Alumni Affairs at Harvard University, will present “Ethical Student Leaders Preparing for Graduate School.” Fittingly, Wiley will present a Graduate School Fair Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Freeman P. and Carrie E. Hodge Center. Schools set to participate in the fair include Alabama A & M University, Charleston School of Law, Harvard University, Southern Methodist University(Perkins School of Theology), Texas Wesleyan University, University of Arkansas, and University of North Texas.

Dr. Joseph V. Crockett, Director of Scholarly Projects at American Bible Society and Associate General Secretary for Education and Leadership Ministries of the National Council of Churches of Christ, will open the conference Thursday night at 7 p.m. by speaking on “Ethical Leadership: Focused on Changing Lives,” at a banquet at the East Texas Conference Center. Dr. Crockett will also be Wiley’s keynote speaker at the President’s Spring Convocation Thursday morning at 11 a.m. in the College’s chapel.

Wiley College will debate Harvard University Friday night at 7 p.m. in the chapel. The topic for the debate will be” Resolved: School administrators should be trained and authorized to carry concealed firearms on school grounds.” The public is invited to attend the debate. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The Ethical Student Leadership Conference is an intensive three-day event that endeavors to equip participants with an ethical framework for leadership by providing a venue to develop and enhance the quality of student leaders at institutions of higher education. The annual event has attracted more than 300 student leaders representing colleges and universities from around the country since 2006.
