The Wiley College Melvin B. Tolson/Denzel Washington Forensics Society is celebrating two tournament victories as it prepares to participate in the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament March 16 – 18, 2012, in Overland Park, Kansas.
The Wiley debate team won its first tournament in three years in early February when it participated in Border Wars on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. Wiley competed against teams from 17 universities to win the tournament, including the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, an accomplished top five American Forensics Association School that has a team of coaches and recruits the best performers in the country.
The debate team went on to earn a second tournament win when it competed February 24-26, 2012, at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate State Championship in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The Wiley Team will travel next to Memphis, Tennessee, to compete in an exhibition debate on March 1, 2012, with the University of Mississippi at Oxford. The debate will take place at New Sardis Baptist Church. The pastor of the church, the Reverend Dr. L. SaSimba Gray, invited both schools to Memphis to take part in the debate.
The team is looking to improve on its record at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament. Last year Wiley ranked third in the nation in debate sweepstakes, and earned an overall ranking of seventh in the nation.
