RELIGIOUS EMPHASIS WEEK OPENING NIGHT MESSAGE:'TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR OPPORTUNITIES'

“The most cherished part of your lives is right now,” the Reverend Harry Blake of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church told students at the opening Community Worship Service for Religious Emphasis Week Monday night in the Julius S. Scott Senior Chapel at Wiley College. Reverend Blake told students to stay cognizant of why they came to Wiley – to obtain an education. Opening his sermon with reference to the scripture Matthew 25:1, Reverend Blake spoke about 10 brides who went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them, the wise brides, came prepared, and five of them, the foolish brides, did not come prepared, and those who were not prepared, lost their opportunity to wed. “Don’t be foolish,” Rev. Blake said to the students. “Don’t waste your opportunity to learn. Take advantage of your opportunities.” Revered Blake said that along the journey students should also grow spiritually so that they will be well rounded and ready to face life’s challenges after they graduate. “God is not just for old folks. If you are a young seeker. He is a young Savior.” Reverend Blake’s sermon brought the students, faculty, staff, and guests attending the service to their feet to applaud his message. The pastor graciously stepped in to deliver the sermon after the night’s scheduled speaker, the Reverend Dr. Frederick Haynes III was delayed by a traffic accident. Rev. Haynes is well, but was unable to attend the opening service. Religious Emphasis Week activities continue today, Tuesday, with an 11 a.m. Mid-Week Chapel Service which will feature a Musical Tribute to Black History by the A Cappella Choir of Wiley College. The President’s Inaugural Clergy of the Year Recognition will take place at noon today in the Freeman P. and Carrie E. Hodge Center. Attendance is by invitation only. Other activities will include a College and Community Worship Service Thursday, February 16 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. The guest speaker will be the Reverend Michael W. Waters of Joy Tabernacle A.M.E. Church in Dallas, Texas, and “Expressions of Our Faith,” a student-led worship service that will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Chapel. For more information about activities this week, please contact the Office of the Chaplain at (903) 923-2455 or the Office of Public Relations at (903) 927-3385.
