NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RECOGNIZES WILEY COLLEGE AS ‘STORM READY’

National Weather Service officials recognized Wiley College as Storm Ready during a special January ceremony that was held in front of the Willis J. King Administration Building on the Wiley campus. With this recognition, Wiley is now the first United Negro College Fund Institution to become Storm Ready, and only the second Historically Black College or University in the country to achieve the Storm Ready status. To be recognized as Storm Ready, a community or university must establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center, have more than one way to receive severe weather forecasts and warnings and to alert the public, create a system that monitors local weather conditions, promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars, and develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises. During the ceremony, National Weather Service officials Armando Garza, Bill Parker, and Keith Stellman applauded Wiley College for enacting these measures to ensure the safety of its students.
