THE HONORABLE HELEN GIDDINGS TO SERVE AS SPEAKER FOR WILEY COLLEGE HONORS CONVOCATION

The Honorable Helen Giddings, District 109, Texas House of Representatives, will be the guest speaker for Wiley College’s Honors Convocation on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Julius S. Scott, Sr. Chapel. This program is open to the public. Students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance are honored each spring semester. They are returning students who in Fall 2009 earned the following semester averages while carrying at least 12 hours: Presidential Scholars (GPA 3.30 to 4.0.), Dean’s Scholars (GPA 3.5 to 3.79), and Faculty Scholars (GPA 3.30 to 3.49). Wiley College is a four-year, private, historically black, liberal arts college located on the west side of Marshall, Texas. Founded in 1873 by the Methodist Episcopal Church's Bishop Isaac Wiley and certified in 1882 by the Freedman's Aid Society, it is notable as one of the oldest predominantly black colleges west of the Mississippi River.
