WILEY COLLEGE HOSTS ANNUAL "MEN OF STRENGTH" CONFERENCE


Men of Strength Conference DownloadMarshall, TX – The Wiley College Men of Strength are delighted to announce that this year’s conference will be held February 21-February 27, 2010 on the campus of Wiley College. This year will include a contemporary art exhibit and a documentary screening premiere. The purpose of Men of Strength Week is to increase retention rates of male students, foster the spiritual development of male students, promote positive images for the young men of Wiley College, bolster the self-esteem of male students, nurture gender and student leadership development and stimulate academic achievement.

The conference will open with a worship service at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church pastored by Reverend James Webb, on Sunday, February 21st at 10:00 a.m. A dynamic exhibit of contemporary art by Robert A. Ketchens will be on display in the Thomas W. Cole, Sr. Library that afternoon starting at 2:00 p.m. and continuing through Wednesday, February 24th.

The annual Men of Strength Convocation will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Julius S. Scott, Sr. Chapel. The guest speaker will be Bishop W. Earl Bledsoe. Bishop Bledsoe was elected to the North Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church in 2008. He has served the church in numerous capacities and brings remarkable understanding and superb leadership to the North Texas Conference. The afternoon awards luncheon will honor Attorney Craig Watkins, Dr. James C. Batten, and Bishop W. Earl Bledsoe and will be held in the Fred T. Long Student Cafeteria at 12:15 p.m.

On Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the Julius S. Scott, Sr. Chapel a presentation of “The Face of Emmett Till” A True Story Told in His Mother’s Words will be shown. This moving production documents the heinous murder of 14 year-old Emmett Till which horrified the nation and galvanized the civil rights movement.

On Friday, February 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the Freeman P. and Carrie E. Hodge Center, Dallas based AMS Pictures in collaboration with Wiley College will premiere its most recent documentary, The Good Fight: James Farmer Remembers the Civil Rights Movement. The screening of the film will be followed by a Q&A with producer Laura Neitzel. The documentary includes footage of the Wiley campus and appearances by local actors, including George Johnson, Tristan and Tanner Branch, Alan Wright, and Derek Ramon Davis. It also includes several folk songs from the civil rights movement recorded by the Wiley College Choir and Visiting Lecturer and Choral Director Stephen Hayes.
