The Wiley Wildcat Volleyball team travelled to Oklahoma City to participate in the 2009 Oklahoma City Classic. Six teams attended the tournament. The defending Red River Conference champs had a strong beginning to the 2009-2010 season, winning three out of four games.
The first match was against Huston-Tillotson, the Wildcats won the first set 25-9, and went on to get their first victory of the season by winning three sets to one. Darly Castillo led the team with 33 kills, and Yuly Charlar led the team with 32 digs. Also Eileen Burbano had 96 assists for the Wildcats.
The second match was against the College of The Ozarks, where the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season. Castillo led the team with 17 kills, meanwhile Jessica Lopez led the team with 14 digs. Burbano finished the game with a team high 53 assists. “No one likes losing, but it gave us a big lesson and an opportunity to learn, exposing our weaknesses,” said Wiley Head Volleyball Coach Nancy Sikobe. “We can now improve during our future practices.” The third match was against the College of Saint Mary, where Wiley lost the first set 26-24. The Wildcats stormed back to win the next three sets 25-18, 25-23, and 25-16. Lopez led the team with 22 kills and 16 digs, while Eliana Leon had 17 digs to help Wiley get their second victory of the season. The final match was against Lyon College and the two teams battled it out. Wiley won the first set 25-14, but Lyon took the second set 25-23. After Coach Sikobe regrouped her team, they went on to win the next two sets 25-21 and 25-12 for their third victory of the season. Wiley returns to action at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, as the Wildcats travel to Texas College in Tyler, TX, to play the University of Saint Thomas.
