AMBASSADOR SPEAKS TO WILEY STUDENTS ABOUT INTERNSHIP POSSIBILITIES WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT

Marshall, Texas—On September 11, 2008 the Department of State launched the Internship Fellows Program. As part of this initiative, Ambassador William Eaton, Diplomat in Residence at the University of Texas at Austin LBJ School of Public Affairs, visited the Wiley campus. Ambassador Eaton spoke with students about internship opportunities with the State Department.

“This is a great opportunity for Wiley students to gain valuable international experience that will hopefully lead to a job with the State Department, said Eaton. “I hope one day they will take my place.”

The purpose of the Internship Fellows Program is to identify talented students from colleges and universities throughout the United States who traditionally have not been the focus of State Department recruitment efforts. The Fellowship will consist of a paid internship, either domestic or abroad, and will be awarded to applicants who exhibit a strong academic record, and who are interested in learning about a career in the State Department.

“It is our hope that students who may not have thought about a career with the State Department will take a closer look at what we have to offer,” said Ambassador Eaton. “Wiley students have a terrific opportunity to enter the State Department as interns and possibly come away from the experience with a career as a ‘great diplomat’”.

Dr. Ernest J. Plata, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Wiley College, attended the launch of the Internship Fellows Program at the Harry S. Truman Building, where he had lunch with State Department officials and was greeted by the Secretary of State, Dr. Condoleezza Rice.
