 Wiley College will hold Honors Convocation tonight at 7 p.m.  in the Julius S. Scott Sr. Chapel.  The ceremony will recognize and celebrate the achievements of students who   earned grade point averages of 3.3 and above during the fall term.

Students who earned grade point averages ranging from 3.3 - 3.49 will be honored as Faculty Scholars. Students who earned grade point averages ranging from 3.5-3.79 will be honored as Dean's Scholars, and students who earned grade point averages of 3.8 - 4.0 will be honored as President's Scholars.

The speaker for Honors Convocation will be Dr. Jeremey D. Courtney. Dr. Courtney is an Internal Medicine Resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.  Over the last four years, he used this platform to motivate youth in his local neighborhood concerning the importance of education, a strong work ethic, and spiritual faith.  He and his younger sister, Tafallah, were reared in a single parent home by their mother, Ms. Angela Courtney, in Jackson.


  Dr. Courtney graduated from Murray High School in 2007 and began his higher education at Alcorn State University, where he obtained a scholarship in Biochemistry.  He maintained high academic honors while attending ASU and set a high standard of excellence for his younger sister by becoming the first member of his family to obtain a college degree.  He graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. 

Determined to reach his life-long goal of practicing medicine, Dr. Courtney applied for and was accepted into medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.  He graduated in 2015 and began his residency in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine.  Dr. Courtney is a member of several honor societies, including Alpha Kappa Mu, Beta Kappa Psi, and Beta Beta Beta.  He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 

The public is invited to attend Honors Convocation to celebrate this special night with student honorees and to hear Dr. Courtney's words to encourage them to persist to achieve their goals.
