Inside The Class of 2015

Tamika Shields graduated from Wiley College in May with a degree in biology.  This former Miss Wiley is now making plans to attend dental school.  This summer, however, she is engaged in volunteer work  in San Antonio helping underserved youth through the "Project Transformation" ministry. Enjoy this Q and A with Ms. Shields!

Where I’m From: I was born in Los Angeles, California, but I was raised in Memphis, Tennessee

My Major: I have now received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology.

Living the Wiley Life: During my time at Wiley College, I was involved in copious amounts of programs including  singing in the renowned A Cappella Choir and serving in the Student Government Association and Student National Medical Association

My Aspirations:  I aspire to attend Meharry College of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee, to become a world-renowned dentist specializing in orthodontics.

Family Ties: My parents are Cassandra Shields and Johnny Shields Sr.  I have four sisters and two brothers.

Favorite Scripture: Proverbs 16:3…...Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.

What I am most proud of: I am most proud of my cultural growth and my ability to think open-mindedly because of my decision to step outside of my comfort zone.

I can do all things because: God enables me to do anything that I choose to put my mind to because He makes all things possible for me through Him.

My Summer Plans:  I am working as an interns with Project Transformation. This involves me committing myself to giving back to  under-served children in the community through entertainment and most importantly education.

Favorite spot on campus: I love sitting on the yard right in front of Thirkield Hall.

Words to Inspire Wiley students: Wiley Wildcats, this is the time for you to learn from mistakes and grow from them so you do not repeat the cycle. You will reap the harvest by being more mature and focused, and by being an  example to others on  how to overcome those very same  mistakes and obstacles.  We don’t  overcome trials alone but with and through the strength that God gives generously.
What difference has Wiley made in your life? I can most definitely see the difference  between who I was four years ago and  who I am now  as a graduate because I have grown in every area of life thanks to my experiences here at Wiley College. Wiley has taught me how to endure and overcome. Wiley has also taught me how to sacrifice, prioritize, and feel good about making good decisions in the end. Wiley has taught  me  I can achieve my goals by putting God first,  staying focused and by  persisting to attain those goals.  I have learned that we must all  encourage one another and uplift one another along the way.
